5 Books You Must Read ASAP

Hamna Ali, Grade 11

Reading is a skill we learned when we were children and have been using ever since. Some people read as a hobby, others only read when they are told to or for a school assignment. Well, whether you are a book lover, someone who reads occasionally, or even someone who wants to get into the habit of reading, here are 5 books you need to get your hands on.

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Bayron

Forget everything you know- or think you know- about Cinderella. This story, which takes place 200 years after Cinderella’s death, tears apart the classic tale of Cinderella that we have all likely heard. This story follows sixteen-year-old Sophia, a girl who lives in Lille, a kingdom under extremely strict rule. Each year, the girls in the kingdom of Lille must attend a ball held at the palace, where the men of the kingdom will choose one to marry. The girls who do not get chosen face a terrible fate. Sophia does not want to marry a man, let alone one from Lille. She plans to flee the ball. How will she do it under the king’s watch? Sophia’s journey has many great twists and turns. This book touches on topics such as racism and misogyny. It is also a bit romantic. Nonetheless, it will keep you hooked from beginning to end!

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

You might have heard the phrase “best of both worlds”, but what about the worst of both worlds? This is what sixteen-year-old Starr Carter faces in the book “The Hate U Give”. This story follows Starr, a girl who lives in a poor neighborhood but goes to a wealthy prep school. One day, she witnesses her childhood best friend fall victim to police brutality. This news gets out quickly and Starr, very shaken up by the event, begins to fight for justice. She becomes more independent as she learns which of her friends and even family members are trustworthy. This story is centered around racism and police brutality. It is very well written and will potentially give you a new perspective on some serious topics.

Last of Her Name by Jessica Khoury

If you’re interested in sci-fi or fantasy, this book is a must-read. It follows the story of an ordinary seventeen-year-old girl named Stacia, who lives in her father’s vineyard and spends most of her time with her two best friends. One day, her home is invaded by people who are searching for the last of the royal family, a princess named Anya. Stacia is identified as princess Anya and escapes the planet with her friends as the imperial army attempts to track her down. Now the fate of the world is in Anya’s hands. What will she do? How will it end? This book is a very fictional read, and is great for fueling your imagination!

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

Another fantasy read, this story takes place in a world where humans and dragons co-exist. They signed a peace treaty. Despite that, the two species are not very fond of each other. The dragons work as court ambassadors and have the ability to turn into humans. The anniversary of the peace treaty is near, and the tension between the humans and dragons is very high. Seraphina is not on either side of the unsettling agreement. She is a musician. One day, she hears of the murder of a member of the royal family, she gains interest in the investigation. She begins working with the queen’s guard, Prince Lucian. However, Seraphina has a secret. A secret so alarming that she could be killed if anyone ever found out. She must keep it hidden from everyone, even Lucian. Whether you’re a fan of the fantasy genre or not, you will not be able to put this book down!

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

If you’re interested in reading a book series, this one is for you. The series as a whole is called “The Folk of the Air '' series. The Cruel Prince is the first book in the series. This book is a fantasy. It tells the story of Jude, a human girl whose parents were killed when she was young. She has a twin sister and an older sister. Her older sister is a Faerie. When their parents were killed, the three girls were taken to the Faerie world and now live with the royal family. Jude has many rivals in the royal family, as many of the Faeries despise humans. However, she wants to feel like she belongs with them. To do that, she must stand up to the one who hates her most, Prince Cardan. Suddenly, the Faerie world faces a civil war and Jude must save everyone. This story never faces a dull moment. You might be surprised with the plot twists; and the ending is, well… interesting, to say the least.
