BR Expansion Finally Approved!
By Faiq Farooq
After a long wait, Bishop Reding has been approved by the Ontario government to start construction for expansion. MPP for Milton, Parm Gill announced in a press release on February 13th that the school would be receiving nearly $20 million to construct 29 new classrooms, a new cafeteria for students to eat in, a fourth gym, and a new child-care centre (with 1 infant room, 2 toddler rooms and 1 pre-school room); all part of Phase 1 of the new addition. Phase 1 of construction was scheduled to be completed this August but was unfortunately pushed back due to delays in the approval of the proposal.
Bishop Reding is now currently at twice of its student capacity, which meant 43 portables were needed this year to house the student body. The congestion in the hallways and entrances is a safety issue. It could lead to problems when evacuating students, or ensuring the safety and personal space of people entering and exiting the school. Catholic trustee for Milton, Marvin Duarte said: “The [Bishop Reding] community is presently on the edge due to space constraints”. Mr. Duarte is “confident that the community welcomes this decision to proceed with construction.” As a school, we look forward to the new changes that our building and community will be undergoing.
