Olivia Trujilo, Grade 10

Do you like reading books? Ever find yourself looking for the newest and most popular books to read next? BR’s book branch looks at Tiktok’s most recommended books and reviews them for students. This month, three books have been selected from the list that involve parts of Halloween; gore, faeries, mysteries and magic.

TITLE : Six of Crows

AUTHOR : Leigh Bardugo

RATING : ★★★★★

SUMMARY : Six of Crows follows the story of a skilled young businessman in Ketterdam, a fictional world, who, like anyone, is always out to make the best deals. One day, Kaz Brekker is offered a dangerous deal for a mission that could make him wealthy beyond his imagination. However, he cannot pull it off by himself. Instead, recruiting five others. A convict with a thirst for revenge. A sharpshooter who cannot walk away from a good gamble. A runaway with a privileged past. A spy known as the Wraith. A heartrender using her magic to survive the dangers of her kind. The six of them are dangerous outcasts, facing one impossible heist. Kaz’s crew is the one thing that will stand in the way of the world’s destruction if they do not act quickly.

REVIEW : I find this book great for anyone who loves a good adventure in a fantasy world. While it can be a bit confusing with the different perspectives, I personally enjoy being able to see every character's thoughts on what’s happening. The author’s writing style also allows the readers to know what’s going on when the group splits. While there are some gore-y scenes in the book, the story is mostly wrapped around adventure and slow-burn romance─ something I quite enjoyed as well. The book leaves you wanting to never put it down, eager for what the next chapter holds. I recommend reading the Shadow and Bone trilogy series before reading Six of Crows for a better understanding of the terms and concepts. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who’s looking for a fantasy/adventure book.

TITLE : The Cruel Prince

AUTHOR : Holly Black

RATING : ★★★★★

SUMMARY : The Cruel Prince follows Jude and her life in the faerie world, being human. She aspires to fit in with the others, but her stubbornness gets in the way, making her stand out. Working towards her dreams of becoming a knight, Jude has caught the attention of the youngest prince─ but not in a good way. Prince Cardan, along with his group of friends, make it their goal to remind Jude and her sister that they don’t belong in the faerie world, and are nothing more than “filthy mortals”. But when the fate of the crown is in the hands of evil, Jude must put aside her hatred for the princeling, and her differences from the faeries, to help restore order.

REVIEW : I find this book perfect for any fantasy lovers or faerie lovers. This is by far one of my favourite book/book series’ out there. The book contains short chapters, which many readers find beneficial, especially when wanting a light read of a chapter or two. The book also contains a fair share of political insight, talking about monarchy’s, rules, and war. It also includes some romance, following the fairly popular trope of enemies to lovers, when two people start off hating each other strongly to slowly caring for one another, and eventually falling in love. If you’re looking for a book that involves a strong female main character, then this is definitely the book for you.

TITLE : One of Us is Lying

AUTHOR : Karen M. McManus

RATING : ★★★★

SUMMARY : One of Us is Lying follows the story of four students who are suspected in the murder of a fellow classmate, Simon Kelleher. Each student was in the room that day, and each student has their own secrets that they hope to keep behind closed doors. The real question is, how far will they go to keep those secrets buried from the world?

REVIEW : This book is perfect for anyone looking for a good murder mystery. While it isn’t one of my favourite books in general, it is still up there on my list. The plot line is more basic, with a murder in the school and four students as the suspects. It is a novel with lots of plot twists that leave you wanting more. Readers may find themselves connecting to one of the characters, whether it be the jock, or the nerd, or even the other students. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good murder mystery, or anyone who wants to start getting into murder mystery books.
