Get to Know This Years Student Council Candidates!

Updated: Oct 8, 2019

By Paige Hogan and Richa Bhandari with a tiny bit of assistance from Davin Caratao

We contacted this year’s candidates running for student elected council positions and asked them a few questions about themselves. We hope this helps you get to know who is running, and a little bit about them!

Questions we asked:

  1. What experience do you have?

  2. Why do you think you best fit this role?

  3. One fun fact about you

Co Presidents

Davin Caratao

What experience do you have?

I was twice elected to student council as a grade representative, I have been a LINK Crew and Legacy Leader, and I was elected HCDSB North Halton Student Trustee.

Why do you think you best fit this role?

I’m not an elitist, establishment candidate. I’ve always seen myself as a man of the people; and I have done my best on council these last years to represent the needs and views of my peers. I’m willing to put in the work, and with my experience, I know how to be a competent president. If I were to be elected, I’d serve with honesty, integrity, and dedication

Fun Fact

I was named “Person of the Year” by TIME Magazine in 2016, at the young age of 13.

Sean D’Mello

What experience do you have?

I am the current Grade 11 Rep for Student Council. I'm part of many clubs and initiatives in our student body, like DECA, MUN, Business Club, STEM team, and more!

Why do you think you best fit this role?

I believe I best fit this role because I have a year's worth of experience in Student Council - experience I believe is integral to be able to effectively perform the role of Co-President. To be an active member in Student Council, one must be open to innovation and ready to put in the work, and the role of president is no exception. I've been able to exemplify this through Council in the past, and thus, have the necessary experience for a fruitful future as President.

Fun Fact

I'm allergic to dogs and have a dog named Dexter.

Sergio Fortun

What experience do you have?

I have not been in council before but have been in leadership groups like Link Crew and SAA.

Why do you think you best fit this role?

I am hard working and dedicated to my role and the tasks I have to perform.

Fun Fact

My favourite soccer team is FC Barcelona.

Anjolie D’Gama Rose

What experience do you have?

I’ve taken part in a number of leadership opportunities both in and out of BR. I was a Legacy and LINK Crew member in grades 10 and 11, respectively. I was also nominated as BR’s ambassador to attend the Central Ontario Leadership Seminar last year and am now a Halton Club representative for them. I currently co-run the school GSA, Spectrum. Furthermore, I organized the Students Say No walkout earlier this year and am the Fridays for Future Climate Action liaison for BR.

Why do you think you best fit this role?

Over time, I’ve developed a complex relationship with BR’s student population. You watch kids hold themselves back and give up because they convince themselves they can’t possibly succeed. Having dealt with myself, I can say that I get what it’s like, but I know that it’s false. If we’re going to say “We are BR” every morning, it should feel like something positive to us, and ‘rebranding’ the school is something I’ve become quite familiar with. Now more than ever, our school needs proper leadership. With the ongoing cuts and the ever growing student population, we can’t afford to go on as we always have. I hope to preserve the things that make BR great while also adapting and expanding its presence to the oncoming climate.

Fun Fact

I’d like to think I’m pretty snazzy with a bow and arrow and have been shooting for about 3 years now.

Grade 11 Representatives

Jason D’Souza

What experience do you have?

Including only the clubs that involve leadership at school, I was previously in Legacy and helped out with grade 7 day, started SAA this semester and am currently helping with the Student Athletic Banquet, was part of business club and helped set up BR's Got Talent, and am part of LINK crew for next year.

Why do you think you best fit this role?

I hope to set up more activities in the caf in order to build stronger community throughout the school. These can include games like Kahoot and Mario Kart, however, I would be open to suggestions. Additionally, I would like students to more easily give opinions about things around the school, so I would like to set up an anonymous suggestion page on Google Forms so that students have more say with how the school/council run things, for example, our announcement page on the werbr website has 45 slides and is very difficult to use on a phone, especially in less than average wifi. Hopefully, we can find out what students really think about issues like this and, potentially, how they would like them resolved. For the announcements, it would probably be in everyone's best interest if they were posted on the Instagram story like before, as they were easy to access if you couldn't hear the PA.

Fun Fact

I think clouds are cool.

Talla Enaya

What experience do you have?

I have experience as a Grade 10 Rep, on the Relay for Life committee and many other past leadership opportunities.

Best fit?

I have very good leadership skills, including communication skills, ability to control situations, naturally assuming authoritative roles. I also have a few Ideas as for what I want to do to help BR become more of an involved and cordial place. I would like to help make school spirit days better advertised and more engaging through the advertising. I would also like to suggest to council (although I am not sure if it will happen) that we give hallways names like streets to help new students find their way around the school without the possibility of getting lost. Many more plans like this, and I feel I would best represent the Grade 11s of the 2019-2020 school year.

I am a martial artist and a figure skater at the same time.
