How to be motivated and productive right now!

By Gabriella Bonnell

You might be struggling to stay motivated right now, especially if you’re currently in Cohort C. It can be hard to get your work done without your friends or seeing your teachers in person. You may also be struggling to get daily small tasks complete because you get distracted by your phone, TV or fridge! Here’s a few tips to stay motivated and productive in your school work and life.

  • If you find you get distracted by your cell phone during school hours at home, try using the app Flora to stay focused. Flora is a free app that reminds you to stay off your phone for a chosen amount of time. You can also try placing a phone charger far from your workspace and charge your phone during the day.

  • Take the time to set up your workspace or desk in a way that suits you. If you know you get distracted easily, make sure your desk is clean and minimalistic. I always have my favourite pens, notepad and potted plant on my desk. Other than that, I maintain a clean workspace because I know that works well for me.

  • In the height of quarantine you may have found it difficult to picture those future goals and dreams. Try creating a goal board, then place it somewhere you can see it everyday. It is proven that goal boards help inspire us and bring our greatest goals to life. Even creating lists and marking off your tasks as you go is a great way to get those daily chores done. • Find time for the things that make you happy. While this might seem like the most unproductive thing you can do, it will actually help you focus in the long run. If you ever find yourself without work to do, quickly take that time to step outside, shoot some hoops or play with your pet.

  • Gather your smartest friends and make a (virtual) study group! Getting your homework done with your friends is a great excuse to hang out, and your parents can’t even yell at you! If they do, show them this website: https://www.fnu.edu/10-reasons-form-study-group/#:~:text=2.,Get%20Better%20Grades&text=A%20study%20group%20can%20help,on%20tests%2C%20and%20on%20assignments.

  • Lastly, you’re the star! So why not focus on yourself? It’s really important you understand where, when, how and with whom you work best. Even if you’re in grade 12, it’s never too late to learn these things about yourself. Take notes next time you’re being really effective in your studying: where are you, with whom are you working with, what time is it, how do you feel, what’s around you and what are you using? Then, you can recreate the perfect study environment every time and maximize your productivity. It will take time to implement these into your life, and don’t forget to reach out to your friends, family and teachers if you ever need any help.
