Opportunity to Rise: Remembering Kobe Bryant

By: Valuscha Pereira

On January 26th, 2020, the world received the news.

Kobe Bryant and his 13-year old daughter Gianna were involved in a fatal helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. There were no survivors of the crash, producing an overall death toll of 9 individuals. The families of the victims were left shattered and incapable of believing the news.

Kobe Bryant was known throughout the world as a five-time NBA Champion. He joined the NBA directly out of high school and played his entire 20-season career as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, eventually retiring in 2016 at the age of 38. He was named MVP in four of the 15 All-Star games he played and was ranked at number 14 in the NBA’s list of the 50 best players in American basketball.

Although Kobe was most notably recalled for his legendary basketball career, he was also a kind and generous individual. He was dedicated to ensuring that his successes were reflected in the many lives he touched, most notably through the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation. The organization provided financial resources and specialty programs to youth and families in need, and was devoted to bettering the lives of others. Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s wife, has continued to seek support for the Foundation and urges that her husband’s legacy may be remembered through its continued support, as well as prayers for their family.

In remembering the life and legacy of Kobe Bryant, it is imperative that we are always mindful of the gift of life, and how delicate it is. We all have the power to inspire others and to advocate for positivity and change.

It’s just as Kobe said, “Everything negative - pressure, challenges - is all an opportunity for me to rise”.
